WORKING AS A FAMILY IS THE KEY TO EXCELLENCE

sthem rankingUUM ONLINE: Academics and administrators at the School of Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Management (STHEM) have been reminded to work as a family to achieve success.

Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), who is performing the duties of Vice-Chancellor, stated that becoming a champion necessitates collaboration among university denizens, as success cannot be achieved through individual efforts.

According to him, the success achieved by UUM is the result of the collaborative efforts of academics, administrators, and support staff in accordance with the concept of Strategic Plan and Gagasan Gemilang Akademia & Admin Holistic (GAGAH), which resulted in aspirations to move forward without leaving each other behind.

He stated that everyone should play their best role by assisting one another in running good governance.

"My heartfelt congratulations go to STHEM on the school's upcoming move to a new building, which is expected to be finished by the end of this year, so I hope everyone will do their best with a new spirit when they move to the new building later.

"In addition, I hope that STHEM, led by its Dean, Dr Johan Afendi Ibrahim, can develop strategies to strengthen its centre of excellence (CoE) by mobilising teams that will improve performance and elevate the CoE," he said yesterday at the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2022 Certificate Presentation Ceremony at the STHEM Meeting Room.

THE World University Rankings by Subject 2022, which were released on 13 October, stated that Business and Economics, the university's main subject, managed to jump to the 201-250 band in the world, where STHEM is one of the schools involved, in addition to UUM's success in being listed in the top 100 universities in the QS World University Ranking 2022- Asia.

Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman also revealed plans for UUM to own a hotel under STHEM, as well as establishing a strategic cooperation project between UUM and the Ministry of Rural Development (KPLB) and Sungai Petani Kedah Municipal Council (MPSPK) to develop the tourism sector in Tanjung Dawai, such as assisting in the development of homestays, which will involve the villagers in the area in an effort to improve accommodation facilities for tourists.

Meanwhile, Dr. Johan Afendi expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Prof. Dr Haim Hilman, who was willing to take time out of his schedule to hand over the certificate of the QS Asia University Rankings 2022, which placed UUM in the Top 100 group.

"Praise be to Allah, for the first time, STHEM has been listed in THE World University Rankings by Subject. This success is the result of the collaborative efforts of STHEM partners who have successfully increased achievements in research, publishing, teaching, and supervision.

"God willing, STHEM will strive to maintain the achievement by conducting various programmes and activities, particularly in supervision, research, publication, and collaboration with industry and universities via MoUs and MoAs," he said.

Furthermore, he added, STHEM will actively promote itself in order to entice students to choose STHEM as the location for their studies in tourism, hospitality, and events.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Azilah Kasim, Director of the Langkawi International Tourism and Hospitality Research Centre (LITH), STHEM, expressed her gratitude and pride in STHEM's success.

According to her, STHEM's success is not easy to achieve without the hard work of all parties. This is due to the current situation, in which there is increasing global competition, and being listed in THE ranking, let alone being placed in the Top 201-250 group for Business & Economics subjects, is no easy feat.

"Hopefully, we will continue to be strong and determined in assisting UUM to excel," she said.
