UUM ONLINE: Shah Alam - Mr. Faris Daniel Rizal Zainorizal, a 20-year-old student at Universiti Utara Malaysia, was crowned the Best Debater at the 24th Edition of the Royal Intervarsity (IHE) Debating Championship in the ‘Bahasa Melayu (Muda)’ category yesterday.

The victory entitled him to take home a cash prize of RM500 and a trophy.

Mr. Faris Daniel expressed his surprise at winning the Best Debater Award in his category since he faced tough competition.

"I encountered formidable competition from debaters representing other universities such as Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), and Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), who posed significant challenges in my pursuit of this award.

"In addition, the complex title of the proposal, which aligns with the current issue, posed a challenge that I had to overcome prior to reaching this stage," said the Semester 3 student pursuing a Bachelor of Law degree at UUM.

Nevertheless, he expressed contentment with the acknowledgement received and expressed gratitude towards his parents, teammates, coaches, and extended family of the Malay Language Debate Unit for their unwavering support.

Mr. Faris Daniel said that his team successfully qualified for the quarterfinals of the competition but unfortunately could not progress further as they were defeated by the UPNM debate team.

Even so, he expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to represent UUM in the competition. Furthermore, obtaining the award served as a strong incentive for him to further enhance his debating skills in the future.

In addition to Mr. Faris Daniel, the UUM debate team was also comprised of Bachelor of Law students, Mr. Muhammad Tirmizi Rabidin, Ms. Farah Aulia Ahmad Sanusi, and Ms. Nadjween Hanie Mohd Mayan.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan, commended the UUM debaters for their successful representation of the university in the competition, which brought it widespread recognition.

"Let this victory serve as a source of inspiration to other students to attain success in any competition they participate in.

"Prove that UUM students not only demonstrate exceptional performance in academics but also possess the ability to stand out in extracurricular activities such as this debate," he said.

A total of 85 teams representing 19 public universities and four private higher education institutions participated in this year's Royal Intervarsity (IHE) Debating Championship.
