UUM STRENGTHENS COOPERATION WITH THE JAPANESE CONSULATE GENERAL
UUM ONLINE: The courtesy call of the Consul General of Japan, Orikasa Hiroyuki, on the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah, yesterday has strengthened the cooperation between UUM and the Consulate General of Japan in Penang.
The purpose of the visit was to strengthen partnerships and cooperation between the two parties, as well as meetings with university’s academics who graduated from Japan’s universities.
In that meaningful meeting, Haim Hilman gave a short brief but concise description of the university, including the progress of its successes.
He said the courtesy call from the Japanese Consul General further strengthens the relationship between UUM and the Japanese Consulate in Malaysia.
"To be in global rank, I believe in friendship and partnership between various parties because we cannot do it alone to succeed.
"In addition, with the presence of this cooperation, we also want to prepare future leaders to understand and respect each culture," he said.
During that session, he also explained the potential for collaboration such as in edutourism programmes, inbound and outbound student exchange, cultural exchange, UUM-Japan community engagement, academic research and grant, staff exchange and student practicum training programmes apart from establishing a satellite campus in Japan.
Meanwhile, Orikasa said his visit was to discuss future collaboration between the Consulate and UUM in an effort to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
According to him, for that purpose as well, he learned the culture of other countries while promoting global understanding and involvement in various fields between Japan and Malaysia at the same time.
During the meeting, Orikasa also briefed on the realistic and practical approaches of Japanese organisations in six northern states in conjunction with the 40-year Look East Policy (LEP) this year, including organising a revitalised LEP programme.
Apart from that, he said, his part also played a role in helping new students to accept the culture of Japanese society by sharing experiences and knowledge through various activities.
"We are committed to ensuring that Malaysian students in Japan do not only excel academically but also learn about good practices by the Japanese.
“These students will also be our ambassadors to promote Malaysia to the people of Japan by building networks with students and the community where they live," he added.
His visit to UUM ended with a dialogue session with lecturers who studied in the country, before he was brought on a tour to places of interest around the campus, such as golf course, deer farm, Sultanah Bahiyah Library, and the Center for Culture and Arts.
