UUM Sports Arena Set To Boost Sports Activities And Help Produce World Class Athletes
The construction of the UUM Sports Arena which is equipped with world class facilities is bound to make it the first choice venue for the organization of major sporting events in the northern region of Peninsula Malaysia.
UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani said the new facility would add value to the development of sports not only to the university, but also to all other institutions of higher education.
He said that with the well-equipped Sports Arena ready and set in place, the sports activities at the university could be further stimulated hence it will indirectly help produce word class athletes.
He said sports is never intended for achieving victory alone, but more of as a platform of uniting the various races, ethnicities and religion that exist not just in the country but also the world over.
"I would like to thank all the parties involved in their efforts to upgrade the facilities at the Sports Centre and in making the construction of the new Sports Arena possible.
"With this determination and commitment, the university's iconic project has been successfully realized and will certainly be the benchmark for any future developments at UUM," he said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the UUM Sports Arena recently.
He also expressed hopes that the UUM Sports Arena will be a pillar for the organization of major sports tournaments not only at the university level, but also at international level consistent with the efforts aimed at improving the performance of UUM athletes to greater heights.
The Raja Muda of Kedah Darul Aman, His Royal Highness Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Ibni Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin graciously officiated the opening ceremony of the UUM Sports Arena.
The fully-covered Sports Arena or indoor sports arena features the International Football Federation (FIFA) standards acquired futsal courts, the multi-purpose courts are not limited to futsal, but it can also be used as a venue for netball, basketball, takraw tournaments and etc. as well as for recreational use and seating space for spectators.
The UUM Sports Arena which is nearly 4000 square metres in size can accommodate 500 people at a time also houses seminar rooms and an audio visual room.
