UUM SOARS TO THE 161ST POSITION IN TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION YOUNG UNIVERSITY RANKINGS 2021

THEUUM ONLINE: The Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) ranking rose in the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings 2021, when it was placed at the 161st position, up from 201-250 the previous year.

This leap makes UUM the only public university under the age of 50 in Malaysia to record an increase.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani stated that the achievement had further enhanced UUM's reputation as the Eminent Management University on the international stage.

According to him, UUM's 37 years of establishment qualified it to be one of the best universities in the world under the age of 50. It also demonstrated that UUM continued to show consistent improvement year after year, with all efforts for three years since 2019 bearing fruit through various initiatives undertaken.

"It is not easy for a university that is perceived as 'young' to be on par with other leading universities, but it is not impossible to achieve if all UUM denizens play their role and work hard to achieve it.

We have shown improvement, which is very satisfying because this leap affects the university's reputation in a variety of ways. I hope we do not become complacent, but rather strive to succeed in other university agendas, because there is still much to be done to bring UUM on par with other world leading universities," he said.

THE Young University Rankings employs 13 indicators divided into five categories: 30% teaching (learning environment), 30% research (volume, income, and reputation), 30% citation (research influence), 7.5% international views (staff, students, and research), and 2.5% industry revenue (knowledge transfer).

The 2021 ranking also includes 475 universities from around the world that are under the age of 50.
