UUM Researcher Excelled At IPITEX 2019

UUM RESEARCHER EXCELLED AT IPITEX 2019

The success of fellow Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) researcher in winning two gold medals and one silver medal at the Bangkok International Intellectual Property Invention, Innovation and Technology Exposition 2019 (IPITEX2019) not only did the University proud, the accomplishment also enhanced Malaysia's image the eyes of the world.

Dr. Nurulwahida Azid @ Aziz, a fellow lecturer at the School of Education and Modern Languages (SEML), obtained two gold medals through her innovative products namely Cerdik BM Siri 1 and Smart Thinking & Industrial Problem Solving Stimulator, while the third product called English Does not Hurt was awarded a silver medal.

Dr. Nurulwahida said her success was made even more memorable when Cerdik BM and English Does not Hurt each received the Special Award from INNOPO Indonesia, while the Smart Thinking & Industrial Problem Solving Stimulator received the same award from Canada’s, Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills.

According to her, the winning came as a surprise as she knew that her innovative products had to compete with more than 1000 research innovations in the contest which involved 25 countries from around the world.

"Praise be to Allah, when the three research products which the group and I brought from UUM attracted the attention of some foreign countries and in the end these products were ultimately awarded the Special Award from Canada and Indonesia.

"I fervently hope that this accomplishment will be a catalyst to spur more successes in local and international competitions like PECIPTA and ITEX and I would also like to thank the Malaysian Education Ministry, RIMC and the UUM Innovation and Commercialization Centre (ICC ) for rendering their assistance in terms of intellectual property registration," she said.

Cerdik BM also saw the involvement of fellow lecturers from the School of Languages, Civilization and Philosophy (SLCP), Assoc. Prof. Dato' Dr. Nuraini Yusoff as well as two Remedial teachers, Mr. Mohd Zaini Ishak from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Batu Lima, Sik and Mdm. Nordiana Mohd Ali from SK Suka Menanti, Alor Setar.

Meanwhile, the innovative product called Smart Thinking & Industrial Problem Solving Stimulator also saw the involvement of Dr. Sarimah Shaik Abdullah, Ms. Siti Jaizah Nakman and Ms. Nur Yazida Sabarudin, while English Does not Hurt also saw the involvement of Mr. Muhammad Mukhlis Ridzuan, Ms. Nurul Balqis Ridzuan, Ms. Siti Jaizah Nakman, Ms. Nur Yazida Sabarudin and Ms. Najwa Mohamad Zaki.

Cerdik BM which received an external grant from the Ministry of Education Malaysia and the Institute of Language and Literature (DBP) is an application developed to help pupils enhance their reading and writing skills in Bahasa Melayu (BM) specifically by using Flash software with a combination of five multimedia elements namely text, graphics, animations, audio and video. The product is specially designed for students who are unable to master the LINUS constructs - LI (Literacy), NU (Numeration) and S (Screening).

According to Dr. Nurulwahida, the application was built with much attention given to developing ways to attract students to learn, as well as to motivating and building the pupils’ confidence in order to help them master the reading and writing skills by creating a fun learning space.

The Smart Thinking & Industrial Problem Solving Stimulator, a product which was funded by Fundamental Research Grant (FRGS) aims to help improve the thinking skills and problem solving skills of the industry. Meanwhile, English Does not Hurt was developed through the Knowledge Transfer Programme (KTP) grant utilized the Adobe Flash Cs6 to improve English proficiency among primary school children.

IPITEX 2019 was officially launched by the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, ACM Prajin Juntong, lasted from 2 to 6 February, saw participation from several countries such as Canada, India, China, Iran, Indonesia, Romania, Poland, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, Korea South, Croatia, Taiwan and Malaysia, apart from Thailand.
