UUM RECEIVES BIMB CORPORATE ZAKAT AMOUNTING TO MYR50,000

zakat bimbUUM ONLINE: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) will channel MYR50,000 in corporate zakat contributions made by Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (BIMB) to the UUM Student Welfare Fund.

Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) who is performing the duties of Vice-Chancellor, stated that UUM has been selected as the recipient of BIMB corporate zakat since 2018. UUM has received a total of MYR220,000 so far.

According to him, UUM would make full use of the corporate zakat donated to assist students in need, particularly those in the B40 group enrolled at this university.

"With up to 70% of students at UUM belonging to the B40 group, the zakat contribution may indirectly assist them in continuing their studies adequately.

"I appreciate BIMB's concern for the welfare and the needs of students here; additionally, the students who will benefit from this zakat are individuals with potential and a bright future," he stated yesterday during the Presentation of BIMB Corporate Zakat to UUM Ceremony at the Visitor’s Lounge recently.

UUM received a corporate zakat contribution of MYR50,000 from BIMB, which was presented to UUM by Mr. Mohd Fadzil Ajmain, Head of BIMB Northern Region.

Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman also highlighted his aspiration to establish a BIMB Chair at UUM in order to advance the study of Islamic banking.

According to him, UUM, with its large number of academics and lecturers in the field of Islamic banking, could immensely contribute to elevating BIMB's profile through the establishment of the BIMB-UUM Chair.

Apart from that, he expressed gratitude to BIMB for sponsoring the BIMB Gold Medal for IBS graduates who demonstrated excellence at the conclusion of their studies last year, while recommending that BIMB designate the Islamic Business School (IBS) as its adopted school, ensuring the success of the mentor-mentee programme for the purpose of staff development and collaboration between the two parties.

He expressed hope at the conclusion of the meeting that the strategic cooperation between UUM and BIMB would continue to grow and would benefit not just BIMB but also this university. He also expressed optimism for future cooperative projects.

Meanwhile, Mohd Fadzil stated that BIMB earmarked a total of RM11.8 million in corporate zakat for the year 2020 to be distributed to the appropriate parties around the country, including higher education institutions and the State Islamic Religious Council.

"In addition to funding the BIMB Gold Medal Award to three students valued MYR6,000, BIMB has given MYR50,000 in corporate zakat to UUM.

“I would also like to express my gratitude to UUM for its unwavering support and collaboration with BIMB, and even hope that these two institutions fight for Islam can continue to advance the good agenda in the future," he added, applauding UUM's intention to establish a BIMB Chair, the idea of designating the IBS as its adopted school, as well as the setting up of the mentor-mentee programme as worthwhile and exciting initiatives for BIMB to pursue.
