UUM Professors Must Go Beyond Theories And Academia

UUM PROFESSORS MUST GO BEYOND THEORIES AND ACADEMIA

UUM professors have been urged to go beyond theories and academia in order to ensure that their duties are carried out more efficiently and organised. Going beyond theories and academia is crucial towards developing Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Kedah state, in general.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani said the appointment of new professors should not be seen as a routine agenda for every academic staff, even though all academics aspire to become one ultimately.

He said that promotions should become more of a motivation and commitment to work hard for the university.  They should not be tied to theories and academic as they have attained the highest level of academic excellence.

"I want this new assembly of professors to go beyond theories and academic.  They too need to be more structured, organized and efficient in their work and duties as they have been commended before.

"I would like for us to jointly develop UUM and this state, and this year we will see the Institute of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s Thoughts (IPDM) become the backbone of the Kedah state government.

"In view of this, I fervently hope that all professors at UUM can play greater role to pursue and ensure the success of this noble desire," he said at a ceremony where letters of promotions were presented to academic staff at the Senate Room recently.

The ceremony witnessed three academic staff receiving their letters of promotion to the position of Professor (VK7).  Prof. Dr. Ahmad Marthada Mohamed, Prof. Dr. Sallahuddin Hassan and Prof. Dr. Noor Azniza Ishak further added to the total number of professors at UUM to 84 people.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Noor Azniza from the School of Applied Psychology, Social Work and Policy (SAPSP) expressed her appreciation and gratitude towards the Vice-Chancellor and the University’s top management for awarding the promotion.  She also said that the promotion would become a platform for her to continue her services and contributions especially to the community, the state of Kedah, the country and the world.

As for Prof. Dr. Sallahuddin from the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB), he expressed his intentions of contributing to the University in a more meaningful manner namely by improving UUM's position internationally and being on par with other world-renowned universities.

Meanwhile Prof. Dr. Ahmad Marthada said, "This is an achievement that all academic staff look forward to as it is the highest achievement in their careers.

"Being promoted to the position of professor, does not mean that one can be considered as wise in all things, but what is paramount is to be a role model to other academic staff and use the post not only for academic excellence, but excellence to raise the name of the university and uphold the discipline, " said the Professor from the School of Government (SOG).
