UUM BAGS TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION (THE) AWARDS ASIA 2021
UUM ONLINE: The position of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, which has consistently shown encouraging improvement, drew the attention of THE data experts, who selected UUM as the recipient of THE Awards Asia 2021 for THE DataPoints Improved Performance Awards category, which was announced yesterday at THE 3rd Asia Awards.
THE data specialist is responsible for scrutinising each university's performance in the region during the rating data collection process.
The Eminent Management University's historic victory is also very satisfying because it managed to outperform seven other Asian universities in the same category.
The other seven universities are Central South University (China), Guangxi University (China), Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (Saudi Arabia), University of Jordan (Jordan), Kansai Medical University (Japan), Kwansei Gakuin University (Japan) and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (India).
According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah, who is performing the duties of the Vice-Chancellor, the recognition was the first ever received by UUM after being shortlisted in the category and ultimately winning the award.
He attributed the success to the collaborative efforts of all university denizens who worked as a family.
"With this award, we have consolidated the UUM brand on the international stage, enhancing the brand's recognition.
"I hope UUM remains committed to demonstrating excellent performance not only at the national level, but also around the world, because it would be impossible for us to achieve this excellence if we did not work together," he said.
Meanwhile, Times Higher Education Special Projects Manager, Mr. David Suter, stated that UUM's efforts over the years, particularly in the area of international outlook, bore fruit, and it was named the winner of THE Awards Asia 2021.
THE Awards Asia is an international award that recognises the excellence in performance of institutions of higher education in a variety of areas. The event is a continuation of THE Awards, a prestigious higher education award event in the United Kingdom that was held for the first time in Asia in 2019.
THE Awards Asia 2021 include eight categories in which universities must compete, namely Leadership and Management Team of the Year, Excellence and Innovation in the Arts, International Strategy of the Year, Outstanding Support for Students, Student Recruitment Campaign of the Year, Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year, Technological or Digital Innovation of the Year, and Workplace of the Year.
