UUM And Kedah State Immigration Department Strengthen Relations, Enhance Cooperation

UUM AND KEDAH STATE IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT STRENGTHEN RELATIONS ENHANCE COOPERATIONAlor Setar –Having many officers from the Immigration Department Malaysia (JIM)  graduating as the alumni of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has become an advantage for both parties to foster closer ties and cooperation in the future.

UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani expressed his elation as UUM had successfully produced many alumni from the Immigration Department who now lead and hold high positions not only at the state level, but also at federal level. And this also includes the new Director General of Immigration Malaysia.

According to him, the university would ensure that relations with alumni, especially with those from JIM will continue to be in close contact.  Moreover, UUM is the only public university in Kedah with many academic staff and international students who often deal with the immigration department.

He expressed hope that the two sides would help each other to attract more international students to pursue studies at UUM whilst at the same time attract more tourists to Kedah as an effort to help promote the state and generate income.

"In addition, I also hope that the University can offer suitable programmes for our counterparts at the immigration department so they can pursue their studies at Master, PhD or Bachelor degree in UUM.

"We are adopting the APEL system which is Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning as an alternative to those who lack or possess no academic qualifications but have relevant work experience to pursue higher education," he said at the UUM and Kedah JIM Dinner organized by the Centre for International Affairs and Co-operation (CIAC) at TH Hotel, recently.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Kedah State Immigration Department, Mr. Zuhair Jamaludin said that the first ever held dinner banquet was not only to strengthen the relations between JIM Kedah and UUM, but also enhance cooperation between the two parties in immigration related matters.

"I also hope that UUM's management will monitor and check on the  visas belonging to the international students studying at this university to prevent them from committing immigration offenses to the extent of them being detained by enforcement officers," said the Director who is also a UUM graduates.
