Students Need To Be Sensitive In The Field They Choose To Venture Into

STUDENTS NEED TO BE SENSITIVE IN THE FIELD THEY CHOOSE TO VENTURE INTO

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) students are reminded to have sensitivity in mastering the field which they have chosen to venture into.

During the 2019 Co-Curriculum Day Closing Ceremony, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr Hendrik Lamsali expressed hope that students involved in co-curricular activities can make the connection and integrate the talents that they have with the knowledge of the five essential skills.

"The five skills are communication skills, analysing and reviewing skills, self-management skills, social skills and thinking skills.

"In doing so, students are able to develop excellent personality and become the pride of UUM as well as our beloved country," said he who represented the Vice-Chancellor at the Mu'adzam Shah Hall recently.

According to Dr Hendrik, the university found that students pursuing courses and co-curricular activities were able to highlight the extent of their leadership skills because of discipline. They also had the opportunity to rouse cooperation through interaction and problem-solving process.

He further reiterated that in line with the aspirations of the National Education Philosophy through the UUM mission of, 'We Educate Holistic Leaders in the Service of the Global Community' and translate it through the motto of the Co-curriculum Centre, 'Development of Holistic Student' in the hopes of producing skilled, competitive and highly marketable graduates.

The 2019 Co-Curriculum Day drew to a close with a musical theatre entitled 'Tapau', an adaptation of the telemovie comedy 'Kampung Kuala Lambat'.  The musical drama was performed by student actors under the guidance of Mr. Saiful Amir Kidam.  The actors, dancers and performers of the telemovie comedy comprised students who are active participants of the Co-curriculum centre.

"It has been proven that the discipline and creative features that exist are also capable of bringing theatre enthusiasts to any other areas, especially those concerning creative industry.

"I am confident and believe that every effort and cooperation shown here will have a big impact in realizing the National Education Philosophy," he said.

'Tapau' the musical theatre also featured fellow actor cum singers, Izzue Islam. This musical is the continuation of the theatre that was staged in November of last year by students of the Arts Unit, Co-curriculum Centre.

'Tapau' is a story that revolves around the lives of three close friends, Pak Abu, Pak Samad and Pak Din who are still single despite being old. Current issues pertaining to the use of social media applications, smoking rules and human rights are also being showcased.

Meanwhile in the morning, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr. Yusnidah Ibrahim officiated the ceremony which marked the launching of the Co-Curriculum Day 2019  aptly themed,  'Co-curriculum, the Catalyst of Students’ Personality Excellence' held at the PALAPES marching ground.

She said that the programme marked the culmination of months of hard work students put into pursuing various co-curricular courses offered at the university. The programme afforded them with the platform to showcase the knowledge, experience and soft skills that they had acquired.

She also reiterated that apart from the metric of academic success, engagement in co-curriculum can also foster a sense of belonging, polish soft skills and hone interpersonal and intrapersonal competence.

"As a student, one should not instil in oneself that learning at the university is just to attain excellence in the examination or to meet the course needs or simply a way to acquire a degree per se but the knowledge acquired is genuine and should be interpreted in the scholarly context," she said.

She further added that UUM students should take the opportunity and take advantage of all the opportunities offered by the university to improve quality and self-identity.
