MINISTER OF HIGHER EDUCATION AND VICE-CHANCELLORS VISITED DISASTER-AFFECTED STUDENTS IN YAN

L 2.30UUM ONLINE: Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, Minister of Higher Education, and the Vice-Chancellors of various Public Universities visited students in the Northern Zone as part of the Minister of Higher Education Walkabout Programme-Touch of Love to University Students @ MOHE Cares.

During her visit, she proceeded down to the villages around Yan to present offer letters for admission into institutions of higher learning to 11 students and to talk with families affected by the water surge tragedy last August.

"Congratulations to the students who have been admitted to UUM to continue their studies, and I earnestly hope that this admission offer letter brings happiness to them," she added after spending time inspecting the destroyed bridge and damage caused by the flood and water surge.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), lauded the minister's concern for the disaster's victims particularly the students. According to him, her visit to the disaster-affected areas of Yan to meet with students affected by the disaster was one of the best steps she had taken.

“Today we were able to complete a programme with the minister who personally presented the offer letter to the students for the upcoming semester, which begins in October.

“I am extremely pleased with the minister's new strategy, which is supported by the top management of MOHE, the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), and the Vice-Chancellors of the various public universities.

From a positive standpoint, I see the calamity at Yan bringing MOHE closer to the people, and we are extremely pleased that Kedah and UUM are part of this noble effort," he said.

In the meanwhile, he stated that, while the pandemic was far from over, he welcomed students' presence on campus because UUM had made extensive preparations in numerous areas to guarantee that students could study peacefully and in accordance with the established SOPs.

"We are looking forward to their presence on campus, but if they prefer to study from home, we are still prepared by offering study and learning programmes online," he said.

Ms. Nurin Andriana Mohamad Subri had not expected to be visited by the minister and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UUM at her home in Kampung Kuala Dulang Kechil, Yan.

“Alhamdulillah, I am overjoyed, fortunate, and moved to have been chosen to receive an unexpected visit. Additionally, this is my first time receiving such a visit, and I am a little nervous.

"UUM is one of the finest universities in Malaysia, which is why I chose to study there, and Alhamdulillah for the opportunity to study Computer Science, which I have desired for a long time," she stated.

Nurin, who will begin her studies next month, aspires to adapt to the new standards and complete her studies with distinction.

Apart from Nurin, another student, Ms. Nurul Nor Fazliana Ideris also received an offer letter to study Bachelor of Banking programme at UUM.
