MEETING WITH MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AFFORDS IPDM WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME ACTIVE INTERNATIONALLY

Putrajaya - Meeting between Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Dato 'Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani and the Foreign Minister, Dato' Saifuddin Abdullah has opened up a new chapter as well as opportunities for UUM, particularly for the  Institute of Tun Dr Mahathir’s Thoughts (IPDM) to become active at international level.

The meeting held at Wisma Putra recently was aimed at gaining input and views on the implementation of high impact programmes by the IPDM, as well as expressing its keen interest to work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Vice-Chancellor said IPDM was urged to take the initiative to organise the Langkawi International Forum 2020 programme which was aptly themed, Industry for The Future.

However, he said UUM and IPDM should identify strategies that could attract more engagement especially from the private sectors and major industry players such as Korea, Japan and China.

“Through this programme, the scope of discussion will focus more on the aspects of technology management and the selection of implementation programme themes based on the identified thrusts.

“The programme will provide input into decision making and implementation of policies and government policies. It will not only focus on economy, internal politics and social aspects, but it will also be expanded internationally, which will indirectly bring about impact to IPDM and turning it into an institution that plays a vital role in the country, as well as a centre of reference at international level,” he said.

Meanwhile, Director of IPDM, Prof Dr Zakaria Abas said discussions between UUM and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided positive input to IPDM towards becoming an institution that will play a vital role in identifying issues that could be utilised for discussion as well as refine for mutual benefits.

At the same meeting,  Dato' Saifuddin expressed hopes that the expertise of the International Advisory Panel (IAP) could be utilised in the forum so as to tap into their invaluable ideas and views which  will act as a guide and reference in strengthening the country's economic development.
