HIGHER EDUCATION LINKS ASIA AND EUROPE

UUM welcomed academicians from the BRECIL Project who were on a two-day official visit in conjunction with the Programme for BRECIL Study Tour at UUM which began on 25th March.

The delegation headed by Prof. Dr. Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim from Universiti Malaya involved Gothenburg University, Groningen University, SDI Munich University, National University of Laos and Souphanouvong University.

Coordinator of UUM BRECIL, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hariharan N.Krishnasamy said the two-day visit focused on research governance in developing human capital in Institutions of Higher Learning (IPT), especially in Malaysia and Laos.

"This visit provides an overview of research governance at UUM to assist IPT in enhancing governance of research.

"These include mechanisms and services to provide support in research management, monitor research and innovation, observe research ethics, manage grants, and disseminate research findings and publications.

"We hope the study tour will provide relevant input that will help improve governance in research at the National University of Laos and Souphanouvong University," he said.

He also expressed hope that the session which was organized in collaboration with UUM Research and Innovation Management Centre (RIMC), Sultanah Bahiyah Library, Innovation and Commercialization Centre (ICC), UUM Press, School of Computing Studies (SOC) and School of Languages, Civilization and Philosophy (SLCP) would fulfil the set agenda.

Meanwhile, SOC Lecturer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mazida Ahmad said BRECIL is the Erasmus project + CHBE that involve higher education amongst the European Union (EU) and ASEAN countries that focus on development of research and innovative capabilities for good governance and research management.

"The project started from October 2017 and will end in October 2020. It is led by the University of Malaya together with three EU partners, two Laos partners and UUM.

"The project will also expand the knowledge economy agenda and build a higher education area which connects Asia and Europe by supporting the assimilation of knowledge between the EU and ASEAN partners," she said.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani welcomed the delegation and described the tour as an ideal way for researchers to exchange ideas in the enhancement of research-related activities.

"This is indeed an acknowledgement for UUM to be appointed as the host and this effort is in line with UUM's emphasis on high-impact research and the development of dynamic research practices moving toward increased productivity," he said at Manager's Coffee.

"I would like to thank all delegates for making this visit a reality and hopefully this visit will be a starting point for student exchange, research and joint academic activities," he added.
