UUM ONLINE: The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, presented a letter of appointment to the new Dean of the School of Multimedia Technology and Communication (SMMTC), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ariffin Abdul Muttalib, at the Visitors’ Lounge, yesterday afternoon.
The appointment came into effect on 8 January. The formal handing over of the appointment letter was witnessed by the Registrar, Mr. Mohamad Akhir Yusuf; the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UUM CAS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huda Ibrahim; and senior officers of UUM.
In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor said that the duties and responsibilities of a Dean were heavy and exacting since a Dean was accountable to the school, the staff, and the university.
He said that every decision made had to take into account the interests of the university and the school.
"More importantly, there must be consistency in decision making, without marked variations that would give rise to confusion amongst members of staff and the suspicion that the leader is one who cannot take a firm stand when it comes to making decisions.
"In leading a school, of utmost importance is the task of ensuring that the direction of the school is clear and well understood," he said.
The Vice-Chancellor said further that a Dean should ensure that the members of staff were of one mind and that a Dean also needed to practise the principle of consensus in arriving at the best decision.
"SMMTC is not a new school and it is apparent that it has a lot of potential for development in terms of subjects, ranking, and its existing postgraduate programmes. Apart from becoming a purveyor of academic programmes that are hailed as the best, SMMTC needs to come up with strategies to promote the programmes it offers so as to attract a larger number of students.
"At the same time, improvements, including curriculum reviews, especially in the field of information technology (IT), must be carried out because the IT era is one that is typified by constant change and students nowadays can no longer be taught using outdated technology," he said.
Towards the end of the speech, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his hope that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ariffin would work in harmony with all the members of staff concerned, including the Assistant Vice-Chancellor, to inculcate the team spirit and bring into being a highly efficient and respected team.
