UUM ONLINE: 15 June: Ramadan does not only train Muslims to endure the pangs of hunger and thirst. In fact, it also trains them to be Muslims who would willingly help their brothers and sisters in Islam who are in need of assistance.
"Recognizing this great responsibility and its blessings, UUM has taken the initiative to set up the UUM Welfare Home for Orphans as a gesture of its concern and compassion for this group of people, thus opening the doors of mercy to all," said the Pro-Chancellor, Tun Dato' Sri (Dr) Ahmad Fairuz Dato’ Sheikh Abdul Halim, at the 2017 UUM Breaking of Fast Ceremony held yesterday.
He expressed his belief that, with the establishment of the UUM Welfare Home for Orphans, the lives of the orphans would be better managed and their future assured while, at the same time, providing a wealth of opportunities for the denizens of UUM to do charitable deeds.
He said that, when the faithful fulfilled their responsibilities as Muslims towards other followers of the faith, especially towards those who were in dire need of assistance, such contribution would certainly have a positive impact, not only on Muslims, but on all humanity.
Meanwhile, the Vice- Chancellor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, said that the breaking of fast ceremony was an annual tradition aimed at tightening the bonds of fellowship between the staff and students of UUM in a ceremony replete with feelings of goodwill and divine blessing.
According to him, apart from spiritual fulfilment and the presentation of Ramadan contributions to 28 UUM students and students of the Madrasah Tahfiz Al-Quran Hafsah, Jitra, the occasion also celebrated the promotion of 15 members of the academic staff who were handed their respective letters of appointment to the posts of Associate Professor (13) and Senior Lecturer (2).
He said that, since the year 2010, UUM had promoted a total of 445 academic staff members to the posts of Professor, Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer. This, he said, was apart from the 137 administrative staff members who had also received their promotions.
"These promotions signify that all of the staff members concerned have been working hard to improve their level of achievement in accordance with the prescribed standards.
"Hopefully, with this promotion, they will endeavour to boost their personal excellence and, thence, raise the standing of UUM in the region as an excellent university," he said.
Aside from this, he said, while in the process of fasting and making preparations to welcome the advent of the month of Shawwal, UUM had been called upon to improve the lot of the less fortunate and help them become productive individuals of the future. Among the proposed means of doing this, he said, was the setting up of the UUM Welfare Home for Orphans, towards which direction a move had been initiated, namely, eight orphans had already been chosen to be placed in the welfare home in the near future.
He added that UUM would bear all their living and study costs, up to the tertiary level. The intake of orphans, he said, would take place in the near future, after the completion of the selection process.
"UUM is not only trying to help the needy including the orphans; in fact, the university will also develop the UUM Endowment and Waqf Centre.
"I am thankful that many among the campus community are generous and have contributed to the iftar programmes for students, managed by the Islamic Centre, at the Sultan Badlishah Mosque and the Al-Shafi'i Mosque, Bukit Kachi. In addition, their generosity has also extended to contributing to the giant fan endowment fund of the Sultan Badlishah Mosque and the relief fund for Syrian refugees in Lebanon," he said.
The ceremony was also blessed by the recital of Quranic verses and the presentation of a religious talk by the Assistant Director of the Kedah Islamic Religious Department, Sheikh Hazizan Mat Desa, before the call to Maghrib prayers.
Also present at the ceremony were the wife of the Pro-Chancellor, Yang Amat Berbahagia Toh Puan Datin Seri Mazni Mohamed Noor; the wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Datin Seri Norhayati Nazri; Members of University Management Committee, and UUM senior officials.
