UUM Forges Strategic Partnership With The University Of Cambridge

UUM ONLINE: United Kingdom - UUM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Cambridge in yet another forward push in its tireless stride to consolidate and advance its internationalisation agenda. The MoU was sealed during the Vice-Chancellor’s working visit to the University of Cambridge, in May, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC).

The MoU between the two universities was signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, on behalf of UUM, and the Chief Executive of Cambridge English Language Assessment, Saul Nasse, on behalf of the University of Cambridge.

With the forging of this strategic partnership, UUM, through the School of Languages, Civilisation and Philosophy (SLCP), and Cambridge English Language Assessment, University of Cambridge, can look forward to initiating various collaborative programmes and undertakings such as working towards obtaining accreditation for the English language proficiency courses and aligning their level with that of international standards, offering training courses to examiners of oral language skills among UUM academic staff members, conducting high-impact research projects related to the teaching and learning of English, improving the quality of language testing, and offering training courses for language proficiency examiners, as well as establishing the SLCP as an examination centre for the various tests set by Cambridge English Language Assessment.

Cambridge English Language Assessment utilises the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as a guide, in language testing, for the description of the various language proficiency levels.

In Malaysia, the CEFR is currently being used in the formulation of curriculum, testing, and English language teaching materials for use in schools and universities. The CEFR is also used in other countries such as Singapore and Australia.

During his working visit, and at the invitation of Cambridge English and Cambridge International Examinations, the Vice-Chancellor, as the Chairman of the MEC, also participated in a series of discussions related to programmes involving the MEC and the University of Cambridge. He also had a meeting with the Chief Executive of Cambridge International Examinations, Michael O` Sullivan, and visited the Fitzwilliam Museum, the largest museum in Cambridge.

The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied in his working visit by the Chief Executive of the MEC, Mohd Fauzi Datuk Mohd Kassim.
