UUM ONLINE: 28 May - Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) aims to achieve a higher zakat fitrah collection (Islamic tithe) this year compared to the MYR54, 000 collected last year.
In this regard, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, expressed his hope that more members of the UUM campus community who could afford to, and who met the set conditions, would fulfil their religious obligation and pay the Islamic tithe at UUM so that it could be channelled to those in need in the campus community and the surrounding communities.
"UUM came in second in zakat collection under the public institution category and first under the mosque category in the district of Kubang Pasu in 2016.
"With the launch of the Islamic tithe collection much earlier in the year, hopefully more will be collected and distributed to the needy," he said, when launching the 1438H Zakat Fitrah Collection Ceremony at the foyer of the Chancellery building this morning.
"We are in the midst of establishing a Waqf and Endowment Centre in the field of education, and are currently awaiting the approval of the Kedah State Islamic Religious Council.
"Apart from this, we are also in the process of establishing an Orphan Care Centre at UUM for the greater good of the community and UUM," he said.
Shortly after the event, the Vice-Chancellor also fulfilled his obligation and paid his zakat dues to the Director of the UUM Islamic Centre, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ishak, who received the contribution in his capacity as the appointed zakat collector (Amil).
The UUM Islamic Centre has been appointed as the zakat collection agency at UUM and collection counters will be set up at every department on campus and both the mosques at UUM, i.e. the Sultan Badlishah Mosque in Sintok and the Imam Assyafie Mosque in Bukit Kachi, to expedite the collection of zakat.
Also present at the event were members of the University Management Committee, heads of departments, and UUM officials.
