UUM ONLINE: The 75 recently inducted members of the UUM Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) were encouraged to be actively engaged in undertakings that would be beneficial to the community and the country.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Malek Abdul Karim, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, stated as much when officiating the Induction Ceremony for the UUM Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS), held at EDC Hotels & Resorts , yesterday.
Delivering the text of the Vice-Chancellor’s speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Malek said that the UUM Chapter of BGS, with a membership comprising the top 75 students from among six schools under the auspices of the UUM College of Business and the UUM College of Law, Government and International Studies, was the first ever BGS Chapter to be established in Malaysia.
He said, “Up to the present moment, there are only 566 BGS Chapters throughout the world and the majority of them are in the United States of America."
"The establishment of the UUM Chapter of BGS, in perfect accord with our success in attaining the prestigious AACSB accreditation, makes UUM the first university in Malaysia, and the fifth in Southeast Asia, to launch its own BGS Chapter.
"The students selected to be members of the BGS Chapter hail from six different countries and are currently pursuing their studies in 14 academic programmes at UUM. To merit selection, these students had to undergo a rigorous selection process in which they had to demonstrate not only academic excellence, but also superlative co-curricular capabilities," he added.
"I would like to urge all members of the BGS Chapter to become active members and to contribute significantly to the growth and betterment of their friends, university, community, and country," he said.
Meanwhile, the representative of BGS United States, Prof. Adith Cheosakul, said that UUM was the only university in Malaysia that had taken the initiative to approach BGS United States with the intention of establishing the first ever Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter in the country.
"Besides its numerous Chapters throughout the world, BGS has also established 30 Alumni Chapters in major metropolitan cities around the world,” he elaborated.
At the same event, Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Malek received a BGS certificate of recognition from Prof. Adith. This was followed by the presentation of appointment credentials to the President of the UUM Chapter of BGS, who is also the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UUM COB, Prof. Dr. Yusnidah Ibrahim, and the Advisor to the BGS Chapter, Prof. Dr. Rushaimi Zien Yusoff, who is Professor at the School of Business.
