The MEC Should Think Outside the Box To Find New Ways To Generate Revenue

UM ONLINE: Kuala Lumpur - The Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) should think outside the box for ways to diversify their avenues of revenue generation.

The Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, who is also the Chairman of the MEC, said that the Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM) examination, which was the primary responsibility of the MEC, brought in revenue through its fees.

"However, the findings of a SWOT analysis shows that, in this aspect, the STPM is in a very vulnerable position compared with that of the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

"Currently, the MUET has surpassed the STPM examination in that it contributes far more revenue to the MEC coffers than does the STPM examination,” he said when speaking at the 2016 MEC Excellent Service Awards Ceremony, yesterday.

He added that, as a new initiative, the SKBMW (Malay Language Proficiency Certification Test for Non-Malaysians) had been introduced to foreigners.

"In Malaysia, there are about 2 million registered foreigners and more than 5 million who remain unregistered.

"Thus, the MEC community needs to think outside the box to find ways to generate more income through the MUET, SKBMW, and the STPM examination," he said.

"I would also like to congratulate the members of the MEC staff who have been conferred the Excellent Service Award,” he said in acknowledgement of the well-deserved recognition accorded to the awardees.

A total of three categories of awards were presented on the occasion, specifically, the MEC Loyal Service Award, the Excellent Service Award, and the Incentive Award.

Also present at the event were the Chief Executive of the MEC, Mohd Fauzi Mohd Kassim, and other MEC officers.
