UUM ONLINE: In efforts to increase the admission of students from the B40 group (that is, the bottom 40% of households with a monthly income of MYR3, 900 and below) into institutions of higher education, a meeting was held between Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar and the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, at the UUM Welcome Centre yesterday.
Tan Sri Sahol, who is also the Chairman of the Destini Anak Bangsa Foundation (YDAB) said, the meeting had touched on the coordination and implementation of the Education Tour 2017 programme.
He explained that the programme, which involved all public universities, was first implemented in 2016 to help 150,000 students from poverty-stricken sections of the populace, nationwide, who had dropped out of school after obtaining their Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM).
"Through this programme, 37,324 SPM leavers from among the underprivileged, settlers, orphans, and the Orang Asli (aboriginal inhabitants of Malaysia,) were successfully afforded a second chance at acquiring higher education and advanced skills at 11 selected educational institutions.
"Seeing this achievement, it was decided that this programme should be continued in 2017, but with the involvement of more strategic partners," he added.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, expressed his wholehearted support for the programme, which offered an opportunity to disadvantaged students to pursue their studies at the tertiary level in an attempt to transform their future.
Also present at the meeting were the Director of the Chancellery, Mr. Ahmad Rasidi Abdullah, and officers from the YDAB, Mr. Muhammad Fareez Abu Suaib Khan and Mr. Muhammad Ridzwan Abdullah.
After the discussion, Tan Sri Sahol spent some time visiting parts of the University in a Green Forest, including the Varsity Mall.
