UUM Team Wins Second Place In The Nescafé Hub Programme And Brings Home A Cash Prize Of MYR 3,000

UUM ONLINE: Fired with boundless zeal and driven by team spirit coupled with smart strategy, nine UUM students clinched the second place and brought home a cash prize of MYR3, 000 in the Nescafé Hub Programme (NHP) held at Surian Tower, Selangor, recently.

The team leader, Ho Kam Weng, 22, said that the programme served as a platform for honing business knowledge apart from opening the mind towards becoming young established entrepreneurs ready to face any challenges.

"This is the first time that I have led a team representing the university. Even though I have had the experience of heading activities in a club or an association, the feeling involved in leading a major project that is not only a business but also a competition, is totally different," said the student of the Business Administration programme.

He stated that, all together, the competition took three months, starting from the preparation of the business plan, its presentation, the interview session conducted by Nestlé, and till the operation of the Nescafé Hub in UUM.

"In a month, two weeks were allocated for training while the remaining weeks were used to operate the Nescafé Hub business involving 40 volunteers, who helped us to run the business operations in this competition,” he said.

He added that the success they had attained would not only further inspire and engage the interest of the students involved, but also encourages other students to venture into business, be it while they were on campus or after they graduate.

“By taking part in this entrepreneurship programme, I have improved my communication skills and have grown wiser in making decisions apart from being able to put into practice the actual business management practices.

"We have been very fortunate that this programme has had the support of the UUM community, and my utmost gratitude goes to the College of Business (UUM COB), the Student Affairs Department (HEP), and everyone involved, especially our advisor, Dr. Normalisa Md Isa, whose unflagging enthusiasm and constant motivation kept us focused throughout the competition.

"This competition saw the submission of 70 working papers by contestants from over 20 universities, and it is really heartening that we made it to the final. Though we failed to bring home the champion’s medal, we are consoled by the fact that the experience we have gained is far more valuable than any medal," he added.

Their success was also lauded by the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UUM COB, Prof. Dr. Rushami Zien Yusoff. Prof. Dr. Rushami expressed his pride in the achievement of the students at the competition, which saw the participation of both the public and private universities.

"This competition has taught them to optimise their time and manage it wisely in terms of attending classes and, at the same time, managing their business well.

"I would like to urge more students to participate in this programme next year. They should not miss this opportunity because the programme is packed with knowledge, new skills, and experience that are important to students who will undergo their practical training later on," he said.
