UUM ONLINE: Putrajaya - The Premier, Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, launched a book on the Implementation Plan of the Malaysian Syariah Index 2016-2018 at the Seri Perdana Complex, recently. The Malaysian Syariah Index is a complementary product of Islamic governance in the country through a more comprehensive measurement of the demands of Islamic law.
UUM is among the six public universities engaged in the Malaysian Syariah Index research, which encompasses eight (8) fields namely Education, Law, Economics, Health, Politics, Infrastructure and the Environment, Society, and Culture.
UUM has been appointed, for the second time, to conduct research and measurement in the field of politics by the Malaysian Syariah Index Governance Committee. The Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato 'Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, and the Dean of the Islamic Business School (IBS), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nasri Md Hussin, attended the ceremony on behalf of UUM.
Meanwhile, in his keynote address, the Prime Minister said that, to ensure that the country was well-governed, its governance must be based on one objective and adhere to the five (5) principles of Maqasid Syariah, which encompass the protection and preservation of religion, life, intellect, heritage, and property.
According to him, the degree to which these principles were applied in governance would determine the scores on the country’s achievements in terms of governance based on the principles of Maqasid Syariah. "This model of Islamic governance based on the principles of Maqasid Syariah, is the first in the world.
"This implementation plan will monitor the Malaysian Syariah Index to determine whether improvements need to be made to ensure that the nation’s administration based on the principles of Maqasid Syariah, is beneficial to the people and the country," he said at the launching of the book on the Implementation Plan of the Malaysian Syariah Index 2016-2018.
The Prime Minister expressed his confidence that the efforts would prove to be fruitful and that Malaysia would be among the world's top 20 countries in terms of applying the principles of Maqasid Syariah universally, that is, not solely for the Muslim community in this country.
He added that, with the implementation of these principles, the nation would obtain the blessings and acceptance of Allah and become a successful nation. Towards the end of the ceremony, the Prime Minister handed the book on the Malaysian Syariah Index Implementation Plan 2016-2018 to the Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr. Ali Hamsa, as Head of the Malaysian Public Service.
The Malaysian Syariah Index was launched by the Prime Minister on 10 February 2015 in conjunction with the Premier Assembly of Ulama-‘Umara’ 2015. The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) successfully implemented the Malaysian Syariah Index research to produce the first index score of its kind in the country, in 2015.
Also present at the ceremony were Ministers in the Prime Minister’s Department, Major General Dato' Seri Jamil Khir (B) and Dato' Seri Dr. Shahidan Kassim; the Director-General of JAKIM, Tan Sri Dato 'Haji Othman Mustafa; and senior government officials.
