The signing of the MoA was officiated by UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak and Country Head, ACCA Malaysia, Mr. David Chin. Present to witness the signing ceremony were the Dean of UUM School of Accountancy (SoA), Prof. Dr. Kamil Md. Idris and Mr. Vincent Hah, Business Development Manager, ACCA Malaysia at the Mersawa Room, EDC-UUM Hotel, yesterday.
In his speech the Vice-Chancellor expressed his appreciation and gratitude to ACCA Malaysia for having the confidence to collaborate with UUM by means of providing its students with the opportunity to gain access to professional qualification which ultimately supports the professional development particularly in the area of accounting.
According to him, the collaboration between UUM through SoA and ACCA Malaysia has long existed in fact both parties have collaborated in earlier MoA which focused on 'Conditional Exemption Scheme'.
He reiterated that the MoA also proves UUM to be a continuous viable partner for international professional bodies such as ACCA thus, strengthening the role of UUM as a centre of learning with exceptional reputation in the field of accounting.
"With the signing of this MoA based on the new scheme, I believe more UUM students will be given the opportunity and also the privilege to pursue their professional qualification with ACCA.
"In the previous scheme, only students for the Bachelor of Accounting (Information Systems) with Honours benefited from this special scheme, but with the ‘ACCA Accelerate Scheme' programme, the new batch of students of the Bachelor of Accounting will be able to enjoy the benefits offered by ACCA , "he said.
Meanwhile, Country Head, ACCA Malaysia, Mr. David Chin said the 'ACCA Accelerate' programme is only offered exclusively to 12 educational institutions across the country. These institutions have recorded exceptional performance in Malaysia and UUM, for one has the reputation of producing quality talent.
He further added, potential UUM students could take up the ACCA paper in the third year of their studies and those who succeed will enjoy the rewards or benefits that come with it namely initial registration fee waiver, free annual subscription for two years after graduation and invites to attend ACCA conferences which indirectly provide fellow UUM graduates with the opportunity to set up networks with new partners and leading employer.
"Starting this September, the ACCA examinations will be offered in four sessions per year and UUM graduates who enjoy the 'accelerated pathway' will be able to graduate with their degrees as well as obtain their ACCA qualification simultaneously. This will give UUM graduates the added advantage in the job market and thus making them highly sought after by leading companies in the country and abroad.
"I hope the ACCA collaboration with UUM will be a long and productive one. This collaboration will assist UUM in helping many young accountants achieve their goals, dreams and aspirations," he said.
He also added that the 'ACCA Accelerate' programme is in support with the Government aspiration which is to provide more access for local graduates to improve their chances of getting a job that match their recognised qualification.
