UUM ONLINE: Alor Setar, 6 November - The tabled Budget 2019 which created a myriad of polemics amongst economists, whether positive or negative should be respected as each side has its own basis.
Kedah Menteri Besar, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir said that each party should agree to disagree on certain matters in the interest of the people.
"Consensus or compromise in different and diverse views is important to get the best outcome or result for all stakeholders in the hopes of prospering the nation's economy and increasing the welfare of the people," he said in his speech at the launch of the 2019 Post-Budget Forum organized by the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Economic and Financial Policy Institute (ECoFI), School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB) at the TH Hotel yesterday.
According to him, the post-budget discussion has resulted in useful discussions with inputs made available for the Ministry of Finance to be implemented in the 2019 Budget.
"The discourse platform such as the 2019 Post-Budget Forum can also be implemented at the Kedah State level with the UUM ECoFI taking the initiative to provide input to the Kedah State Treasury in the preparation of Kedah State budget strategy for 2019 and subsequent years.
"I also hope that there will be research and development collaborations as well as innovation between UUM and the Kedah State Government, particularly with the Kedah State Economic Planning Unit (BPEN) by drafting the Kedah 2020-2035 Outline Perspective Plan (OPP) action plan to develop the economy of Kedah so as to achieve the advanced economic status such as Penang and Selangor," he said.
Meanwhile, UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani said the Post-Budget 2019 forum provides a smart partnership platform between UUM-Kedah State Government that can be beneficial to both parties in achieving the vision and mission of the respective institutions.
"I hope the forum is not merely a forum, but the Resolutions achieved should be formed as input to the Federal Government as well as the State Government.
"The cooperation between BPEN and ECoFI will be the first co-operation model for the subsequent collaborations of research, development and innovation between UUM and other state agencies," he said.
The Post-Budget Forum 2019 featured four (4) leading speakers from various backgrounds discussed and commented on the current budget comprised Deputy Finance Minister, Dato 'Amiruddin Hamzah; President of MAPIM, Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid; Director of BPEN Kedah, Muhamad Mahizi Ibrahim and lecturer at School of International Studies, Assoc.
