UUM ONLINE: With the aim of raising awareness on women’s rights amongst students, the Law Student Association organised the Law Student Conference (PEMUDA VI) with the theme, ‘Women’s Right: Combating Discriminations Against Them’ at Seminar Hall A, Convention Centre, recently.
Kedah State Legal Adviser, Dato' Nor' Azura Mohamed Zohdi said, women play important roles and are also entrusted with duties to help develop the nation and the society. However, the awareness of women's rights is still lacking, and women still face all forms of discrimination in their life.
This conference did not only discuss about issues commonly associated with women’s rights, but also the challenges faced by women including domestic violence, crime and leadership and the fight against the elements of discrimination.
"In addition, this conference also presented the opportunity to discuss issues related to gender equality for the reason that legally, women and men have the same rights.
"In Kedah, we have yet to reach the 30 percent women decision makers in the public and private sectors, despite the increase in women's position," said Dato' Nor' Azura during the officiating ceremony of the Law Student Conference (PEMUDA VI).
At the same event, Dato' Nor' Azura also launched the Palu and Lombok Disaster Relief Fund to lessen the burden of the recent earthquake and tsunami victims.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the School of Law, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zainal Amin Ayub said, PEMUDA VI is an important platform that helped to expose students on issues concerning women's rights and how to address the discrimination against women.
