UUM ONLINE: 29 November- The Festival of Indonesia (Pesta Rakyat Indonesia) brought to light the rich and diverse artistry of the Indonesian culture, and obliquely strengthened the relationship between Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries. The annual event was held at the Mu'adzam Shah Hall, UUM yesterday.
The theme chosen for this year’s Pesta Rakyat Indonesia was - 'A Glimpse of Nusantara' and the event brought out the best of the artistic talents of the local and international students in UUM in various performances including the fashion show, musical drama, Papua Dance, Tarian Kipas (Fan Dance) and other performances from international students.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak; Universiti Utara Malaysia has always had positive relationship with Indonesia - our neighbour and a very important friend.
“What is more, it is commonly known that the two neighbouring countries share several similarities. Both countries are made up of various and diverse cultures, ethnicities, languages and religions. Therefore, cultural understanding and tolerance for diversity and differences are essential to maintain peace and harmony, added Prof. Dato’ Seri.
He said that, the involvement of local and international students in organising the festival will help to inculcate tolerance and strengthen the solidarity through the celebration of culture.
"I truly hope that this event will further strengthen the kinship between Malaysia, Indonesia, and other countries as well. I also wish that through this event, UUM students will be inspired and motivated to be more active and creative in both academic and non-academic pursuits," he said.
Meanwhile, a Bachelor of Finance student, Rahmanti Fitrasha said, the annual festival organised by the Indonesian Student Association highlighted the unique and fascinating diversity of cultures.
"We tried to accentuate the rich artistry and cultures from every part of Indonesia- from Sumatra to Java and at the same time showcase the talents and creativity of the students.
"About 1000 people turned up for the festival and we are certainly delighted with the presence of UUM Vice-Chancellor to this festival. This is an honour for us," added Rahmanti.
