UUM Is The University Of Choice For 4,957 New Students Admitted To The First Semester Of The 2017/2018 Session

UUM ONLINE: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has continued to be the university of choice for students wishing to pursue their undergraduate studies as more than 4,957 new students began their enrolment, earlier yesterday, into the 36 Bachelor Degree programmes offered for the First Semester of the 2017/2018 Session.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim, said that the students were candidates who had passed and acquired an approved entry qualification such as the Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM), Diploma, Matriculation, UUM Foundation Management Studies, or the Malaysian Higher Certificate of Religious Education (STAM), as well as international students who would be pursuing their studies in the Bachelor Degree and the Dual Degree (Double Degree) programmes.

According to Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek, out of the total intake, 74 percent (3,656) were female students and 26 percent (1,301) were male students.

"Based on the breakdown of the student intake, 4,446 are local students. They comprise admissions through the Central University Unit aka UPU (4,047), the UUM Management Foundation Studies (186), the Special B40 programme (190), and the student mobility programme (23). The international student intake, on the other hand, totals 511. These students comprise 78 undergraduate students from 19 countries, 295 mobility students, and 38 students of the Dual Degree programme from Universitas Padang, Indonesia.

"The intake of students this year also shows an increase of between two and three percent in the number of international students, with the highest number of students coming from China (247), Indonesia (172) and Yemen (23)," he added.

According to Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek, the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of the new student intake for this year registered 3.42 and that three degree programmes recorded the highest admissions CGPA, namely, the Bachelor of Accountancy (Information Systems) with Honours and the Bachelor of Accountancy with Honours programmes (3.93), and the Bachelor of Law with Honours (3.80).

He added that the Bachelor of Accountancy with Honours programme received the largest number of students (306), followed by the Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours (299) and the Bachelor of Economics with Honours (290).

"Of the 306 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Accountancy programme, 116 students obtained a CGPA of 4.00.

"The university also received the enrolment of five disabled students and two students of Orang Asli (indigenous people) origins. The university has provided new facilities for the disabled students such as the newly acquired van, which is sophisticated and more comfortable for their purposes, as well as residential facilities and other amenities including those in the disabled-friendly lecture halls," he said.

As of 30 August, UUM has a total of 28,025 undergraduate students and 5,601 postgraduate students.
