UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak stressed that, at the present time, being knowledgeable is simply inadequate. Students must practice good virtue and offer their services to the society.
"With the rapid technological advancement these days, knowledge has become unlimited and easily accessible. But it's not enough if students do not practice good virtue.
"Mahatma Gandhi once said that one of the seven social sins is knowledge without character. Without good character, a person is deemed unwise,” said Prof. Dato' Seri during the New Students Oath Taking Ceremony for Academic Session 2016/2017 at Mu'adzam Shah Hall.
He added that, possessing both the knowledge and virtue is still incomplete if you do not give back to the society.
Rasulullah s.a.w stated that, "The best of people are those that bring most benefits to the rest of mankind". Therefore, I sincerely hope that within the four years of your academic sojourn at this university, you will improve yourselves and gain new knowledge, uphold good virtue and offer your service to the society. I would like to encourage you to be actively involved in the activities offered by numerous community, clubs and associations at the university,” said Prof. Dato' Seri.
A total of 4,114 students participated in the recitation of the pledge as the new students of UUM. This event is the highlight of the New Student Orientation Week Programme for the First Semester, Academic Session 2016/2017.
The recitation of the pledge was led by Aiman Mohd Zamri, in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor and UUM top management team. He then presented the declaration document to UUM Registrar, Mr. Mohammad Akhir Hj Yusuf.
The ceremony also saw the rebranding ceremony of UUM Student Residential Halls. The halls will now be identified as Student Residence or “Inapan Siswa” (INASIS).
Also present at the ceremony were members of the University Management Committee, members of the UUM Senate, UUM senior officials and the President of UUM Student Representative Council (MPP), Muhamad Aiman Mohd Nahzeri.
