Former Foreign Minister cum Chairman of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Syed Hamid Syed Jaafar Albar said that International Studies is a subject that is flexible or 'multidisciplinary ' which would enable students to hold jobs related to analytical studies, politics and international relations.
He said that with the current scenario of today’s world of globalization, international studies would indeed be a very important discipline to study.
"Thus, with conferences such as this, it would indeed help create understanding and tolerance in terms of the different political systems and see how these political systems function.
"It is time for us to go out and project ourselves to the rest of the world with confidence," he said at the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 ICIS at the Grand Seasons Hotel last night.
He added that young people should also be encouraged to interact and engage with the world community.
According to him, international studies should be taken up by young people or students as it dwells into a myriad of fields such as economy, culture, politics and even the environment.
In the conference, with its apt theme 'Emerging Contours of World Order: The Challenges Ahead' , students would be encouraged to exchange ideas on current issues related to international education, to nurture a community interest on various issues at hand, and to expand networking amongst participants.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said the ICIS theme this year proved to be timely as it looks at the challenges facing the world today.
In this regard, he fervently expressed his hope that the conference would achieve its objectives and that the participants would be able to exchange views and find solutions to the contemporary issues related to international studies.
Also present were the Chairman of the Yayasan Minda, Senator Tan Sri Dato' Seri Prof Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah and the UUM COLGIS Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Assoc. Prof Dr Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani and the former Malaysian ambassador to Uzbekistan, Dato’ Mohamed Redzuan Mohamed Kushairi , who is also a UUM Adjunct Professor.
