In her Royal Address, Yang Teramat Mulia Dato’ Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, Tunku Panglima Besar Kedah (Member of Kedah Council of Regency) and also the Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) stated that, the conference theme reflects the extensiveness of the massive global issues and challenges that could possibly become the root causes of instability and conflicts around the world.
The five major threats to the world stability are Islamophobia, terrorism and political violence; integrity and adherence to good governance; refugee crisis; human migration and the identity of regional community.
"Therefore, in order to deal with the impacts of these threats, we have be more understanding and accepting of the differences and learn to embrace diversity by organising discourse sessions to increase awareness on the importance of leadership integrity and getting the involvement of all parties to resolve the problems of refugees and migration as well as enhancing trans-boundary and regional collaboration efforts.
"I sincerely believe that, with these measures, conflicts and chaos could be avoided and only in doing so, we could create a more stable basis for a peaceful world for our future generations,” stated Yang Teramat Mulia Dato’ Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz in her Royal Address at ICIS 2016. The event was held at the Grand Seasons Hotel this morning.
Her Highness also expressed her delight at seeing the commitment of UUM in addressing issues of good governance and leadership integrity with the establishment of the Asia Pacific Institute for Corruption Studies (APICS) UUM which is expected to play a crucial role in fighting corruption.
The two-day ICIS 2016, the sixth edition of the conference organised by the School of International Studies (SoIS), featured three prominent key-note speakers i.e. Senator Tan Sri Profesor Dr. Ibrahim Shah Abu Shah, Chairman of Yayasan Minda; Dato' Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak, Chief Executive Officer of NCIA and the former Malaysian Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Dato' Mohamed Redzuan Mohamed Kushairi.
The conference saw the participation of more than 150 participants, with a total of 70 papers by 138 local and international scholars from Indonesia, Zimbabwe, India, Japan, Thailand, Iraq, Libya, Australia and Yemen.
Also present during the Royal Address were UUM Pro-Chancellor, Tun Dato' Sri (Dr.) Ahmad Fairuz Dato' Sheikh Abdul Halim; UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak; Kedah Deputy State Secretary (Development), Ammar Shaikh Mahmood Naim representing the Kedah State Secretary and the Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UUM COLGIS who is also the Dean of SoIS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani.
ICIS 2016 Opening Ceremony will be officiated by the Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Syed Hamid Syed Jaafar Albar who is also the Chairman of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).
