Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) launched the collection of Zakat Fitrah 1437H this morning. The ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni) Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Malek Abdul Karim at the Foyer of the Chancellery building this morning.
Speaking at the ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Malek said, besides being an obligation, paying the tithe encourages the feelings of compassion for those in need, fosters the spirit of giving, nurtures the act of kindness as well as being charitable during the blessed month of Ramadan.
"I was informed that the collection of Zakat Fitrah in the previous year amounted to RM52,000. This year, we aim to collect more and we hope that more staff will pay the tithe in this university so that more assistance can be offered to the people in the surrounding areas including the orphans, the poor and underprivileged. Last year, we also sent some contributions to the religious schools," he said.
He added that, UUM Islamic Centre has been appointed as the Amil for the zakat fitrah collection and zakat counters will be opened at every department and also at both UUM mosques.
Also present at the ceremony were members of the University Management Committee, Director of UUM Islamic Centre, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ishak and senior university officers.
