Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Malek Abdul Karim, who read the Vice-Chancellor’s speech said that the Utara Book Fair is one of the many efforts by the university to attract visitors to visit UUM in conjunction with Discover UUM 2016.
He said that the much awaited 7-day book fair, which commenced on 20 March, is able to attract visitors from the northern region in particular, to visit UUM.
"In addition, even though technology such as e-books or digital books is starting to be a choice of readers, but there are some aspects to print book culture that e-books cannot replicate.
"To read a digital book is quite difficult because we have to download the relevant application before we can read it," he said.
He further elucidated that the Discover UUM Utara Book Fairs 2016 will benefit the university students since they have just received the RM250 1Malaysia Book Voucher for them to purchase highly selected reading materials at the book fair.
The opening ceremony of the Discover UUM Utara Book Fair 2016 was officiated by the Kedah Executive Council Member, Yang Berhormat Dato' Tajul Urus Mat Zain at the Sultanah Bahiyah Library Foyer, UUM.
He said in his speech, urging the public and private universities to be in a position to absorb global economic climate to ensure the industry continues to grow amid the world economic thirst.
"The new mechanism may need to be explored to find a way to market the book either inside or outside the country, thus demanded close cooperation between publishers at public universities with private parties who are not only concerned about profit alone.
"Apart from that, reading culture should be encouraged especially among the younger generation in order to create the desired knowledgeable society," he said.
At the same event, Yang Berhormat Dato' Tajul Urus also launched new titles including New Book (7), Monograph (4), Edited Book (3) and UUM Alumni (2). He also presented prizes to the Most Frequent Library Users 2015 during the launching ceremony.
Some 76 stalls were opened at the Discover UUM Utara Book Fair 2016, with its apt theme 'Read, Learn, Discover'. It offers a wealth of knowledge through hundreds of titles in various languages along with great promotions, author appearance, drama competition, workshop, colouring contest and a motivational talk by Ustaz Manis.
Also present were members of University Management Committee (JPU), Director of UUMPress and university officials.
