Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) is amongst the appointed universities to carry out the research and develop measurement in political fields by the Malaysian Syariah Index (ISM) Governance Committee, which is appointed by the Prime Minister.
Apart from UUM, the research on the ISM is being done by researchers from four other institutions of higher learning, namely the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak acted as the research advisor for the UUM ISM research team received a certificate of appreciation from the Prime Minister.
The ISM was launched by the Prime Minister on the 10 February 2015 when attending the Ulama'-Umara' 2015 programme.
The index will measure the compliance of eight fields namely judiciary, politics, economics, health, education, culture, infrastructure and environment, and social with Maqasid Syariah or the intentions of Syariah.
At the same ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor also presented the latest UUM Press publication entitled 'Najibnomics' to the Prime Minister.
Also present was the book writer, Dr Irwan Shah Zainal Abidin, a lecturer at the UUM School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB).
