KEDAH MB OFFICIATES 13TH MAKSPEN OPENING CEREMONY

This significant biennial event held for the first time in Kedah, brought together various agencies and departments under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKLW).

Kedah Regional Development Authority (KEDA) became the host for the sports organised by the KKLW Sports and Welfare Club. Meanwhile, UUM was chosen as the main venue for the tournament as well as Alor Setar city, Jitra and Napoh.

Mukhriz, who is also the KEDA Chairman, in his speech, said MAKSPEN was not only a sports platform to create a healthy, active and productive individual but it could also encourage cooperation and teamwork in organisations.

"Indeed, a close group efforts between all the KKLW agencies and departments will successfully enable them to achieve their overall goals," he said.

Meanwhile, Rural and Regional Development Deputy Minister, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi who spoke on behalf of the Rural and Regional Development Minister expressed his appreciation for UUM cooperation in ensuring the success of this sports tournament.

A total of 3,000 athletes from 15 contingents comprised of agencies and departments under the KKLW including those from Sabah and Sarawak will be competing in 19 sports at the 4-day Games, which started on Wednesday.

Among the agencies involved were the KKLW, KEDA, Southeast Johor Development Authority (KEJORA), South Kelantan Development Authority (KESEDAR), Central Terengganu Development Authority (KETENGAH), Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS) and Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA).

The finale of the opening ceremony witnessed a parade of all participating contingents marched in front of the official reviewing stand. The event was also graced by martial arts demos and a band performance from Sultan Abdul Hamid College.

Earlier in the afternoon, Mukhriz together with the contingent and UUM officials rode their bicycles around the UUM campus.

A closing ceremony of the Games will be held on 15 August 2015 at Mu'adzam Shah Hall, UUM at 8pm. The closing ceremony will be officiated by the Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Also present at the ceremony were Secretary-General of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Ibrahim Muhamad; General Manager of KEDA, Dato' Haji Mohd Arpan Shari; President of MAKSPEN, Dato' Hj Ahmad Zubir Abd Ghani and UUM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Malek Hj Abdul Karim.
