The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) involves the study of teaching and learning by identifying learner behaviour with the aim to enhance and intensify learning experiences by accommodating a range of learning styles among the learners.
According to the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), student engagement is a multi-dimensional concept that encompasses academic challenges, collaborative learning with peers, meaningful student-faculty interaction as well as comfortable and conducive campus environment for students.
The distinguished speaker for the Inaugural Professorial Lecture, Yang Mulia Prof. Dr. Raja Maznah Raja Hussain from the School of Education and Modern Languages recently presented the lecture on 'From Just Teaching To SoTL: PLEaSE' at Seminar Hall A, Convention Complex, UUM.
SoTL promotes the study of classroom practices and researchers will reflect on their successes and failures in their own classrooms, and eventually publicise their findings to invite critical review and exchange of ideas. Others can ultimately learn from these observations and outcomes and subsequently take into consideration the fundamental aspects of the discoveries.
The lecture was divided into four parts including the necessity to modify the teaching-learning processes, what is SoTL and how can SoTL assist and transform the teaching and learning techniques in Malaysia, the strategies for engaging students with technology and the correlation between SoTL and PLEaSE.
“Glassick, Huber dan Maeroff (1997) proposed six (6) qualitative standards for the implementation of SoTL, which are setting a set of clearly defined goals, making adequate preparation, employing appropriate methods, recognising significant pedagogical results, emphasising on effective presentation and doing reflection on the critique.
"SoTL will benefit the novice as well as experienced lecturers by presenting them with the opportunities to reflect on and enhance theirinstructional practices,” she added.
Yang Mulia Prof. Dr. Raja Maznah also highlighted the link between SoTL module and the 'Personalized Learning Environments and Students Engagement’ (PLEaSE) to turn passive learners into active ones.
PLEaSE analyses on the extent of the possible impact and application of new technology in the curricula for undergraduate and postgraduate education.
The Inaugural Professorial Lecture series is a platform for all professors in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) to present lectures in their respective fields.
Also present were the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato' Wira Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, distinguished professors, university officers and students.
